Announced this morning, the network has officially renewed “The Affair” for a fifth season, set to air next year, which will also be its last. The news comes as the veteran drama series heads further into the second half of its fourth season, with a season finale set to air on the network August 19.

“We love the intimacy, the nuance and the emotional honesty of ‘The Affair’s’ subjective examination of both infidelity and fidelity,” said Gary Levine, President of Programming for Showtime. “Sarah Treem has always envisioned this as a five-season series, and we will be fascinated to see where she takes her talented cast and all of us next year in its climactic season.”

Co-created by Sarah Treem and Hagai Levi, “The Affair” was met with widespread critical acclaim and some notable awards nominations to boot when it premiered on Showtime back in 2014, and while the show’s critical hype has cooled in recent seasons, it’s still remained a flagship series for the network.

Its current, fourth season follows the show’s original, main four – Alison (Ruth Wilson), Helen (Maura Tierney), Cole (Joshua Jackson), and Noah (Dominic West) – as they each find themselves in new romantic relationships, and as a result, moving farther and farther away from where they were at the start of the series.

In addition to the show’s four lead stars, “The Affair’s” ensemble includes Sanaa Lathan, Ramon Rodriguez, Russell Hornsby, Amy Irving, Phoebe Tonkin, and more. Throughout its fourth season, the series has averaged around a 0.1 live + same day rating with 497,000 viewers, half of the 0.2 average of its third season.
