NBC has made its first pilot pickup for 2018-19, handing out a series order for medical drama “New Amsterdam”

The show, set at a hospital modeled on New York’s Bellevue, centers on the facility’s new medical director (Ryan Eggold of “The Blacklist”), who wants to “tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care,” per the show’s logline.

The cast also includes Janet Montgomery, Tyler Labine, Jocko Sims, Freema Agyeman and Anupam Kher. David Schulner (“Emerald City,” “Do No Harm”) created the show and executive produces with Peter Horton; Kate Dennis (“The Handmaid’s Tale,” “GLOW”) directed the pilot.

“New Amsterdam” is based on the book “Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital” by Dr. Eric Manheimer, who’s a producer of the show. It’s not to be confused with 2008-09 FOX series of the same name, which starred Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as a New York City detective who was immortal.

Aside from “This Is Us,” which got a two-season renewal last year, NBC has yet to pick up any of its current dramas for next season. That will change in the next week.

The network also has comedies “Will & Grace,” “Superstore” and “The Good Place” set to return next season. Drama “The Gilded Age” is also on tap for 2019 (supposedly; it got a series order way back in 2012). NBC will present its full schedule for 2018-19 to advertisers on May 14.
