ABC has picked up a second season of one of the biggest new series on network TV, “The Good Doctor”

The network made the announcement Wednesday, a few weeks before the show wraps up its first season. “The Good Doctor” has three episodes remaining and closes its season on March 26.

The renewal comes as little surprise, as “The Good Doctor” is the top-rated freshman drama on the broadcast networks this season and ABC’s second highest-rated series behind the ageless “Grey’s Anatomy.” It’s the No. 2 new show overall, trailing only CBS’ “Young Sheldon.”

“‘The Good Doctor’s’ message of inclusiveness resonates with our viewers and is a hallmark of what we aim to accomplish here at ABC,” Channing Dungey, president of ABC Entertainment, says in a statement. “This series has quickly joined the zeitgeist and broken records in the competitive television landscape. We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Shaun Murphy will be back for another season.”

“The Good Doctor,” which stars Freddie Highmore as Shaun Murphy, averages a 1.8 rating in adults 18-49 and 9.83 million viewers the night it airs. It’s also one of the biggest beneficiaries of delayed viewing on TV, growing to 3.8 in adults 18-49 and better than 17 million viewers within seven days.

The show has also given ABC a huge upgrade at 10 p.m. on Mondays, almost tripling the same-day 18-49 rating the network had in the timeslot last season.
