FOX has given a quick pickup to its new drama “9-1-1,” renewing the show for a second season after just two weeks on the air

Those two weeks have been pretty strong, to be sure: Its two episodes have averaged a 1.65 rating among adults 18-49 (1.8 for the premiere and 1.5 for episode 2), which makes it the No. 2 rookie drama of the season so far, behind “The Good Doctor.”

The first episode of the show, created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, rose to a 2.7 after a week of delayed viewing, and FOX says 15 million people watched the debut across all platforms (including an on-air repeat). The second episode improved to 2.5 in adults 18-49 after three days of catchup viewing.

“This is storytelling at its best, and we’re so pleased that it’s resonated with our audience,” FOX chairmen and CEOs Dana Walden and Gary Newman say in a statement. “We’d like to thank everyone involved with this production for their stellar work, and we look forward to another thrilling season of ‘9-1-1.'”

The series boasts an impressive cast that includes Angela Bassett, Connie Britton, Kenneth Choi, Rockmond Dunbar, Aisha Hinds, Peter Krause and Oliver Stark. The show follows cops, firefighters and a 911 operator in Los Angeles both on the job and in their personal lives.

“9-1-1” is the fourth show FOX has locked in for next season, following “The Simpsons,” “The Orville” and “The Gifted.”
