“Dynasty” gets some more life on The CW

Announced Wednesday afternoon, the network has officially put in a full-season order for the drama series, which is a revival of the beloved ’80s TV show of the same name. This order will result in the show’s debut season getting an additional nine episodes by the time it comes to its conclusion.

Coming from creators Josh Schwartz, Sallie Patrick, and Stephanie Savage, the series centers on two of the wealthiest families in America, as they feud over the control of their fortunes and children.

The series stars Elizabeth Gillies, Nathalie Kelley, James Mackay, Sam Adegoke, Alan Dale, Robert Christopher Riley, and more. It is produced by CBS Television Studios, along with the original “Dynasty” creators Esther and Richard Shapiro, who executive produce it with director Brad Silberling.

While “Dynasty’s” numbers haven’t been anything to write home about — with the series barely averaging a 0.3 rating in adults 18-49 up until this point — this extension comes as little surprise. The show was created from the beginning to be profitable for the network, thanks in part to The CW having complete ownership over the show and a profitable deal with Netflix that was put in place prior to its premiere.

In other words, all of this is to say, “Dynasty” was destined for some kind of a longer lifespan than its original episode order.

However, other CW freshman series, “Valor,” will not be receiving a full-season order it looks like, despite it doing better in the ratings than “Dynasty.” There’s no word yet on whether fans can expect to see a renewal of the military drama or not.
