FOX has made its first pickup of the new season, extending Season 2 of its drama “Star” by five more episodes

The pickup brings the total to 18 for the season, the same as its lead-in “Empire.” The network had initially ordered 13 episodes for Season 2.

The extra episodes will also likely allow “Star” to be paired with “Empire” throughout the remainder of the season, taking a hiatus in the early part of 2018 before returning for the second half of the season in the spring.

“Star” has performed fairly well over its first two episodes this season. It premiered to a 1.8 rating among adults 18-49, the second-best of its run so far, and scored a 1.4 for its second episode last week. It’s currently the No. 3-rated show on FOX in same-day numbers, behind “Empire” and “The Simpsons.”

With a week of delayed viewing, the premiere improved to a 2.4 in the 18-49 demographic, also the second-best mark for the series behind its pilot episode in late 2016.

Like “Empire,” “Star” is executive produced by Lee Daniels, along with co-creator Tom Donaghy, showrunner Karin Gist and Pamela Oas Williams. The cast is led by Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny and Brittany O’Grady as young singers attempting to make their name. Queen Latifah and Benjamin Bratt also star.
