ABC has locked up a full season of its first-year drama “The Good Doctor”

The pickup comes after Monday’s episode pulled in more strong ratings.

The network has ordered nine more episodes of the show, which stars Freddie Highmore as a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome. That brings it to a standard 22-episode season.

“We are thrilled to announce that we are giving our viewers additional episodes of ‘The Good Doctor,” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey says in a statement. “We have an amazing team in front of and behind the camera, led by Freddie Highmore’s incredibly nuanced performance as Dr. Shaun Murphy, and we’re confident the show will continue to captivate our audience.”

“The Good Doctor” premiered on Sept. 25 to a 2.2 rating among adults 18-49 — more than doubling the premiere rating for last fall’s occupant of the Monday 10 p.m. slot, “Conviction” — and 11.35 million viewers. It rose to 3.7 and 16.86 million with three days of DVR viewing.

Monday’s second episode retained all of its premiere rating in the 18-49 demographic and 96 percent of its total audience, earning 10.93 million total viewers. In both weeks, “The Good Doctor” has built considerably on its “Dancing With the Stars” lead-in.

“The Good Doctor” is the second rookie show to earn a full-season order. CBS picked up additional episodes of “Young Sheldon” two days after its Sept. 25 premiere.

The move also gives ABC some stability in the post-“Dancing” timeslot, which it didn’t have last season. “Conviction” and “Quantico” averaged a mere 0.7 rating among adults 18-49 there in 2016-17.
