FOX has canceled its drama series “Pitch” after a single season, ending several months of speculation about the show’s future

The show, about the first woman (Kylie Bunbury) to play Major League Baseball, earned some of the better reviews for a new series this season but pulled in only modest ratings. It averaged a 0.8 rating among adults 18-49 and just over 3 million viewers the night it aired, rising to 1.4 and 4.68 million with a week of DVR and on-demand viewing.

“Pitch” ended its 10-episode run in December. FOX chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden made supportive remarks about the show to reporters in January, but the more time passed after the end of the season, the more precarious the show’s position became on the bubble.

“I’m sorry to tell you that @PitchonFOX will not be getting a second season,” executive producer Kevin Falls wrote on Twitter Monday evening. “Thank you to our faithful fans for trying so hard to save us. … Love to a terrific cast, crew and writers. You humble me.”

“Pitch” is the second FOX show to get bad news Monday, following the cancellation of unscripted show “You the Jury.”

The “Pitch” cast also included Mark-Paul Gosselaar, Dan Lauria, Meagan Holder, Ali Larter, Mo McRae, Tim Jo and Mark Consuelos. Dan Fogelman (“This Is Us”) and Rick Singer created the series and executive produced wth Falls and Paris Barclay.
