FOX has handed out a renewal to yet another series for 2017-18, picking up a second season of its drama “Star.”

That’s the third pickup in two days for a freshman series on the network, following renewals for “The Mick” on Tuesday and “Lethal Weapon” earlier on Wednesday. The network has also renewed “Empire,” “Lucifer,” “Bob’s Burgers” and “The Simpons” for next season.

“Lee Daniels is a true visionary and he and [co-creator] Tom Donaghy have delivered a series with a unique and meaningful point of view,” FOX Entertainment president David Madden says. “Our incredible cast, led by Queen Latifah and Benjamin Bratt, instantly infused their characters with tremendous depth and passion, and the show has proved to be both powerful and really entertaining. We are thrilled that this ‘Star’ will continue to shine for a second season.”

Through eight episodes, “Star” is averaging a 1.4 rating among adults 18-49 and 4.46 million viewers. A week of DVR and on-demand viewing bumps the show’s numbers up to a 2.2 in the 18-49 demographic and 6.35 million viewers.

The show hasn’t had the meteoric start of Daniels’ “Empire,” but it’s currently running ahead of FOX’s scripted-series average for the season and has put up fairly consistent ratings in its past few outings.

The 12-episode first season concludes on March 15. There’s no word yet on an episode count for next season, although another midseason run while “Empire” is on hiatus could make sense from a scheduling standpoint.

“Star” joins these shows in earning a renewal for the 2017-18 season and beyond.
