Tea Leoni will star in a new CBS political drama pilot.
Madam Secretary will follow Leoni as a "maverick female Secretary of State" who has to negotiate international issues as well as deal with a difficult family life.
Morgan Freeman is producing Madam Secretary along with Lori McCreary and Tracy Mercer from a script by Judging Amy's Barbara Hall.
The series will be Leoni's return to television, coming 16 years after her hit series The Naked Truth came to an end.
She has since starred in the films Fun with Dick and Jane, Tower Heist and Jurassic Park III.
There is no production schedule yet for Madam Secretary.
