NBC has confirmed that Smash will not return for a third season.

The musical drama was widely expected to be cancelled, with showrunner Josh Safran admitting that season two's final episode had been "constructed as a series finale".

Smash was created by Theresa Rebeck, who served as showrunner for the show's first run before being replaced by Safran.

Rebeck later harshly criticised the episodes produced after her tenure, calling season two "a complete disaster".

"Most media reporters would agree that the second season is a complete disaster, and that the troubles with a once-promising show go far beyond fairing poorly in the ratings," she said.

Since returning to US screens in February, Smash's audience numbers have dropped to as low as 1.8m viewers.

The show's final two episodes will air on NBC on Sunday, May 26, while Sky Atlantic will broadcast season two in the UK from July.
