CBS is ready to close the gates and say goodbye to “Zoo”

The network has officially canceled the veteran drama series this afternoon, two years after the series first premiered on CBS back in 2015. Produced by Jeff Pinkner, Josh Appelbaum, Andre Nemec, and Scott Rosenberg and based on James Patterson’s best-selling novel, the series followed an American zoologist named Jackson Oz as he began investigating a recent string of violent and coordinated attacks by animals against humans all around the world. James Wolk led the series as Oz and starred in it alongside Kristen Connolly, Nonso Anozie, Billy Burke, Alyssa Diaz, Josh Salatin, and more.

The series was produced in-house at CBS, but thanks to an intricate deal with Netflix, the show’s seasons were allowed to be streamed instantly on the platform following their respective finales for the past two years.

However, that didn’t stop the show’s viewership numbers from dropping in its most recent third season. The show was down an average of nearly 2 million viewers from its second season and averaged around a 0.5 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic. This was down two-tenths from the 0.7 that its second season had averaged, and five-tenths from the 1.0 of its first.

The news of “Zoo’s” cancellation comes just following CBS’ recent renewal of the Alex Kurtzman-produced thriller, “Salvation,” for a second season. “Zoo” and “Salvation” were the only two scripted series to air on the network this past summer. Despite its cancellation today as well, “Zoo” still stands as the network’s longest-running original scripted summer drama.
