FOX has picked up freshman drama, “Prodigal Son,” for a full season today, extending its first season’s episode count from its original 13 episodes to a total of 22. It is the first of any of the rookie broadcast shows this fall to receive a full season commitment from its network.

“Prodigal Son delivers a fantastic crime procedural with a complicated and compelling father-son relationship at its core, thanks to the stellar performances from Tom Payne and Michael Sheen,” said Fox Entertainment President, Michael Thorn. “The series has razor-sharp writing, cinematic visuals and is an inventive twist on the genre. We want to thank our executive producers, Greg, Sarah, Chris and Sam, Peter Roth and our partners at Warner Bros., and the entire cast and crew. We can’t wait to see how this twisted journey continues to unfold.”

Created by Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver, “Prodigal Son” focuses on the relationship between a talented criminal psychologist and his serial killer father. Its cast includes Tom Payne and Michael Sheen in the lead roles, along with Lou Diamond Phillips, Halston Sage, Aurora Perrineau, Frank Harts, Keiko Agena, Bellamy Young, and more.

The show’s full season order today comes as welcome news for “Prodigal Son,” which has been one of the season’s more notable freshman performers up to this point. Two episodes into its run, the series has averaged a 1.0 L+SD rating among adults 18-49 and 3.97 million viewers, making it the highest-rated freshman show of the season so far.
