Netflix will be getting back in the ring next year
Announced today by the streaming service, “GLOW” has officially been renewed for a third season. The news of which comes almost two full months after the series released the entirety of its second season near the end of June. It also comes several weeks after “GLOW” received a total of 10 Emmy nominations for its first season.
The series, created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch, focuses on the real-life ’80s wrestling league known as Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, and follows the fictional story of a struggling actress (Alison Brie), who starts to build a new life (and alter ego) for herself in the up and coming wrestling ring. Along with Brie, the series’ ensemble includes Betty Gilpin, Marc Maron, Sydelle Noel, Britt Baron, Gayle Rankin, Britney Young, and many more.
It is executive produced by “Orange Is the New Black” creator Jenji Kohan, Tara Herrmann and Mark Burley, alongside Flahive and Mensch. Its Emmy nominations this year included not only an Outstanding Comedy Series nod, but also one for Gilpin for Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series and one for Jesse Peretz for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.
While Netflix and all of the other streaming platforms do not publicly share their viewership numbers, the renewal of “GLOW” comes as little surprise. The series has been a critical darling throughout both of its first 2 seasons, raked in a solid number of Emmy nominations for itself this year, and has amassed a dedicated fan following for itself.
So despite Netflix taking a more ruthless approach to some of its half-hour comedies in recent years, it doesn’t look like “GLOW” has to worry about suffering a similar fate anytime soon.
