The CW has announced this morning that the long-running post-apocalyptic drama will be ending with its seventh season, set to air on the network next year. The news, which was announced this morning on Twitter by creator Jason Rothenberg during the the CW’s summer TCA appearance, comes several months after “The 100” was given an early season 7 renewal back in April – a week before the premiere of its sixth season.

“With #The100 Season 6 finale just days away, I have some bittersweet news to share: Season 7 will be our last. We are eternally grateful to WB & CW for always allowing us to tell our story the way we want to & to wrap the show on our terms. What an incredible ride this has been!”

“Jason Rothenberg has said to us a number of times that he wanted to end with the seventh season. He has other ideas he wants to do and thought this was the right way to go,” commented CW president, Mark Pedowitz. “We’ve been very good at listening to our showrunner creators about when is the right time to end a series.”

Based on the book series by Kass Morgan, “The 100” takes place ninety-seven years after a nuclear war has destroyed civilization, when a spaceship housing humanity’s lone survivors decides to send one hundred juvenile delinquents back to Earth in the hopes of possibly re-populating the planet. Its cast includes Eliza Taylor, Paige Turco, Bob Morley, Marie Avgeropoulos, Lindsey Morgan, Henry Ian Cusick, and more.

In its sixth season, “The 100” has averaged a steady 0.2 live + same day rating among adults 18-49 and 697,000 viewers, down a bit from its fifth season’s L+SD averages (0.3, 962,000).

With this announcement, “The 100” now joins “Supernatural” and “Arrow” as the third veteran CW title that will be ending its run on the network next season. “The 100’s” season 6 finale, meanwhile, will air Tuesday, August 6.
