Starz has renewed “American Gods” for another season, just a week after its second season premiered. The series, inspired by Neil Gaiman’s novel of the same name, will also feature a new showrunner, Charles ‘Chic’ Eglee, who will be the third person to serve in that capacity. Eglee is an alumnus of “The Walking Dead,” “Dexter,” “The Shield,” and a host of other shows. He takes over as showrunner following the departure of Jesse Alexander, who himself replaced Bryan Fuller and Michael Green.

“Audiences continue to worship at the altar of ‘American Gods’ and we are excited to be able to announce to all the true believers that there is more of this fantastical series to come,” Starz programming president Carmi Zlotnik said in a statement today. “With Chic at the helm, the invaluable insight and contributions of Neil Gaiman and the undeniable talent of this dedicated cast and crew, we know that the show will continue to deliver on the vision and promise laid out in the novel.”

Gaiman also expressed enthusiasm regarding the news. “I’m thrilled ‘American Gods’ has been renewed for a third season, and even more thrilled that I’m getting to work on it with Chic Eglee,” he said. “Chic is the best partner-in-crime. We’ve been working for weeks now on the shape of the season and I’m delighted that he gets to carry the ‘American Gods’ torch on to glory. Thank you to Fremantle, Starz, and Amazon for having faith in the series, to Bryan, Michael, and Jesse for bringing it this far, to all the cast and crew, and most of all to the viewers. It’s their love of the characters that took us to this point, and will take us on to the next chapter.”

The series began with Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal”) and Michael Green (“Logan”) at the helm, but after budgetary clashes with producer Fremantle Media, they departed. Jesse Alexander took over in their wake, hoping to lead “American Gods” in a direction which was more faithful to the novel, but he allegedly struggled with the position and was sidelined in the midst of production.

The second season debuted to an audience of about 722,000 viewers, a bit lower than the 774,000 who viewed the first season finale. From here, the burden of righting the show’s past troubles will fall squarely on Chic Eglee’s shoulders.
