Creator Justin Marks announced on Twitter today that Starz has chosen not to pick up the J.K. Simmons-led sci-fi drama for a third season. But while “Counterpart’s” time on Starz is coming to an end, the show’s producer, MRC, is reportedly shopping the drama out to other outlets, for a possible pickup elsewhere.

The news comes just ahead of the show’s season 2 finale this Sunday, which depending on whether or not MRC can find another home for it, could now act as a series finale for “Counterpart.”

“It’s been an absolute dream for this team … we got to make exactly the show we wanted to … perfect cast, perfect crew on two continents … and we’re so grateful to our network for the time we had,” wrote Marks. “Thank you to everyone who made this journey so special for us. Your tweets, podcasts and intricate conspiracy theories have made it all worthwhile. Fingers crossed that our wonderful studio, MRC, can find a way to keep the dream alive! But in the meantime, one more episode until the end of a chapter. See you Sunday!”

“Justin, Jordan, J.K. and the entire cast and crew delivered a beautifully executed series. It was a pleasure working with this team on two seasons of expert storytelling brought to life by best-in-class performances across the board,” added Carmi Zlotnik, President of Programming at Starz.

While a critical favorite, “Counterpart” failed to make an impact in the ratings. Throughout its second season this year, the series has averaged a 0.04 live + same day rating among adults 18-49 with 225,000 average viewers, down from its first season’s 0.09 and 371,000 averages – making it one of Starz’s lowest-rated series.

The season 2 finale of “Counterpart” will air this Sunday night on Starz.
