AMC has renewed the infamous zombie drama for a 10th season, according to a video posted by showrunner Angela Kang on Instagram. The renewal of the series comes just before it returns from its mid-series break on Sunday night.

The ninth season brought with it a number of sizable changes for “The Walking Dead.” Most significant behind the scenes was that this was Kang’s transition to showrunner, having replaced Scott Gimple when he was promoted to chief content officer for both “The Walking Dead” and its sister series, “Fear the Walking Dead.” Series lead Andrew Lincoln also departed during the ninth season, with his character Rick Grimes being sent off to feature in a series of made-for-TV movies.

The exit of Lincoln means that Norman Reedus, who plays Daryl Dixon, and Melissa McBride, who plays Carol Peletier, have graduated to become the new series leads. Allegedly, both actors have signed “franchise/universe” deals that will guarantee them pay whether they remain a part of the flagship series or are moved to some other branch of its universe.

In November, AMC programming president David Madden discussed the expansion of the series with the Hollywood Reporter. “We do look at this as a universe where we’re trying to expand into as many different places as the show fits,” he said.”We think this is a franchise that could live across formats. So we want to do it carefully; we want to be strategic; we want to try to do it right. But there is a multiyear plan that could include additional series, digital content and specials.”

In addition to being the flagship of a growing, lucrative franchise, “The Walking Dead” has become the center of AMC’s massive roster of original series. Others include “Better Call Saul,” “Preacher,” “McMafia,” “Into the Badlands,” and the upcoming Joe Hill adaptation “NOS4A2.”
