X-Men spin-off Legion always seemed too brilliantly off-the-wall to last very long, and sadly that's the case.

The surreal psychological thriller that turned the comic book genre on its head is returning for its third season, but it's now been confirmed that will be the end of a very trippy road for David Haller.

During the TCA press tour on Monday (February 4), FX boss John Landgraf broke the news to reporters that series creator Noah Hawley intends to wrap up the show this June.

"Noah Hawley had always considered Legion to be a three-season show, and he has confirmed that he’s going to stick with his plan," the executive said, stating: "This will be the final season."

Legion left off with Haller (Dan Stevens) escaping the Summerland institute in order to fully embrace the powers he'd been led to believe were an illness for most of his life.

The question remains about whether the series will introduce David's father, X-Men leader Professor X, on-screen before Legion comes to an end.

Noah Hawley has previously said his goal was for Legion to "definitely approach" David and Professor X's relationship, while Shadow King actor Navid Negahban told Digital Spy last year that "there were some talks" about having Xavier on the show.

"I don't know how real the talks were. Truly, I don't know. That's all up to Noah," he admitted.

We should find out soon enough...

Legion will return this June on FX in the US. In the UK, it airs on FOX – and is also available via NOW TV.
