Announced today, the CW has officially greenlit a pilot order for the Rose-led “Batwoman” solo TV series. It will be based on a script written by showrunner Caroline Dries, with “The Flash” and “Arrow” alum, David Nutter, set to direct.

The news comes less than a month after Rose made her debut as the character in the CW’s recent DC TV universe “Elseworlds” crossover, and shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to fans. Immediately after it was announced to be in development, many were predicting a likely pilot and series order for the “Batwoman” title.

With the news that Nutter – who also directed the pilots for “Arrow” and “The Flash” – will be at the helm of the new series’ pilot too, it’s clear that the CW is hoping to achieve the same kind of success with “Batwoman” as it did with those two comic book titles.

The show also represents another milestone achievement in onscreen diversity and representation, as “Batwoman” will be the first-ever superhero series to be led by a lesbian character, played by an openly gay actress (Rose).

Described as having a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane (Rose) soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.

The pilot is executive produced by Dries, Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Nutter, and Geoff Johns.
