‘Daredevil’ canceled after 3 seasons at Netflix

Another Marvel series has been removed from Netflix’s dwindling roster



The streaming service has canceled “Daredevil,” its flagship Marvel series, after three critically-praised seasons. The superhero drama, which stars Charlie Cox as its titular character, with Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson in supporting roles, is the latest in a string of Marvel cancellations on Netflix. Earlier this year, “Iron Fist” was the first to fall, followed shortly afterward by “Luke Cage.” At the moment, the only series remaining in the Netflix-Marvel relationship are “Jessica Jones” and “The Punisher.”

Netflix addressed the cancellation, saying “Marvel’s Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix. We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note. We’re thankful to our partners at Marvel, showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years. While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”

In the midst of this cancellation, Marvel’s owner, Disney, is launching its own streaming service, Disney Plus, which will likely become a powerful competitor against Netflix. Disney plans to remove all of its properties from Netflix, to be housed on Disney Plus, alongside original content which will include a series about Loki, starring Tom Hiddleston. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Jessica Jones” and “The Punisher” will remain on Netflix until the shows have “run their course.”

Netflix itself signed a massive deal for the rights to the work of Roald Dahl, allegedly intending to create an animated series based on properties like “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” They have also recently acquired “The Chronicles of Narnia” for the purpose of creating both films and a shared TV universe.
