“Preacher” still has something left to say

The peculiar drama, based on the comic by Garth Ennis and Steven Dillon, has been renewed for a fourth season at AMC. The show will begin filming a full, 10-episode season in Australia, where its owner Sony Pictures Television has relocated from previous locations including Albuquerque, New Mexico and New Orleans, Louisiana. The official return date has yet to be announced.

The renewal announcement comes after a delay, considering that the show wrapped its third season back in August. The delay has been attributed to producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg trading a deal with Sony TV for one with Lionsgate TV. There are, however, still a handful of shows whose fates remain in the air; dramas “Into the Badlands” and “Humans” have yet to announce whether they will be returning for additional seasons.

Regarding the announcement to renew “Preacher,” David Madden, AMC’s president of programming, said, “Preacher is a show unlike any other on television. A passionate base of fans found their way to Jesse (Dominic Cooper), Tulip (Ruth Negga) and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) and have followed along with their adventures, at times indescribable adventures, for three seasons… We are thankful to our partners at Sony and to Seth, Evan and Sam for everything they have brought to this series, which we are pleased to renew for a fourth season. Like the superfans of Preacher, we can’t wait to see where this journey leads next.”

While the show is by no means AMC’s biggest series, considering it shares space with “The Walking Dead” and “Better Call Saul,” it has carved out a strong niche for itself. The season three finale accumulated a 0.3 rating in the coveted 18-49 demographic, a not-insignificant mark it manages to hit fairly consistently.

Rogen and Goldberg are also the minds behind a handful of other series on the air, including “Black Monday” on Showtime, “The Boys” on Amazon, and “Future Man” on Hulu.
