Nearly six weeks after it ended its second season on a cliffhanger, “Timeless” has been canceled at NBC
The announcement Friday morning comes about a week before contract options on the show’s cast were set to expire. NBC and producer Sony are still in discussions about a two-hour movie to wrap up that cliffhanger.
The cancellation is the second time “Timeless” has been axed. NBC briefly canceled the show last season before reversing course and ordering a second run.
Season 2 of the show suffered sizable ratings declines. It averaged a 0.6 rating among adults 18-49 — down half a point from Season 1, when it mostly aired after “The Voice” — and 2.52 million viewers the night it aired. A week of delayed viewing pushed the show to 1.2 and 4.62 million viewers, vs. 2.1 and 7.99 million in 2016-17.
If a movie deal comes together, Sony will have to re-sign the cast to new contracts for the project.
“If NBC is sincere in wanting a 2-hour movie to give much needed closure to our amazing [‘Timeless’] fans, we are ready to make it,” co-creator Shawn Ryan wrote on Twitter Friday. “We don’t want the journey of Lucy [Abigail Spencer], Wyatt [Matt Lanter], Rufus [Malcolm Barrett] and the others to end yet.”
“Timeless” becomes the 71st show to be canceled in 2017-18.
