HBO has given the go-ahead to film a pilot for one of five “Game of Thrones” spinoffs it put into development

The show will be a prequel, with heavy emphasis on the “pre” part: It takes place thousands of years before the events of “GoT” and will chronicle the end of the Age of Heroes in Westeros and the beginning of “the darkest hour” in the land’s history, including the origin of the White Walkers.

Writer Jane Goldman (the “Kingsman” films) and “A Song of Ice and Fire” author George R.R. Martin came up with the story; Goldman will serve as showrunner. “Game of Thrones” co-executive producer Vince Gerardis and Daniel Zelman (“Bloodline”) will also serve as EPs.

“Game of Thrones” showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss aren’t part of any of the spinoff projects.

HBO put four possible “Thrones” spinoffs into development in 2017. The others come from writers Brian Helgeland, Carly Wray, Max Borenstein and Bryan Cogman, who’s a co-EP of “GoT” and has written 11 episodes.

The final season of “Game of Thrones” is due to air on HBO in 2019. Any “successor series,” as HBO has called them, would follow the final season.
