Announced this afternoon by FX, “Legion” has officially been renewed for a third season, the news of which comes just as the series is preparing to wrap up its critically-acclaimed second season. Based on the Marvel comics of the same name, and adapted by creator and showrunner Noah Hawley, “Legion” follows the adventures of David Haller (Dan Stevens), a man who believes himself to be schizophrenic, only to discover that he’s actually an extremely powerful mutant telepath.

In addition to Stevens, the show’s ensemble also includes Rachel Keller, Jean Smart, Jemaine Clement, Aubrey Plaza, Bill Irwin, Jeremie Harris, Amber Midthunder, Katie Aselton, and Navid Negahban. Praised for its trippy visuals and storytelling techniques, the second season of “Legion” has averaged a 0.2 live + same day rating in adults 18-49 with 439,000 viewers, down from its first season’s 0.5 average.

“Legion has redefined the superhero drama and exceeded all expectations as the intensity and revelation build through the second season,” said FX President of Original Programming Eric Schrier and Nick Grad. “We are incredibly proud of Noah Hawley’s achievement and are honored to continue the series as it pushes the boundaries of conventional television storytelling. We are also grateful for the contributions of our executive producers, John Cameron, Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg, and Jeph Loeb with Marvel Television, as well as our outstanding cast and crew of this groundbreaking show.”

Only 2 episodes remain of “Legion’s” second season. It will air its season finale on FX later this month.
