Indeed, the network has officially put in a series order for “Demimonde,” it announced this afternoon. The news of which comes just after reports surfaced that Apple been engaged in a bidding war for the series. However, following his work as a producer on the first season of “Westworld,” it’s likely that Abrams felt confident in HBO’s ability to not only help the series find a large audience but also give it the kind of high-end, cinematic treatment that the network’s biggest titles have become known for.

From the sounds of it too, it seems like “Demimonde” will benefit greatly from as high a production budget as possible. The series is the first that Abrams has written since “Fringe” in 2008, and according to HBO, is “an epic and intimate sci-fi fantasy drama.”

Incorporating the same mystery elements that have become fundamental in Abrams’ work, the series will revolve around a family – consisting of a mother who works as a scientist, her husband, and their young daughter, who get into a terrible car crash. But after her mother ends up in a coma following the crash, her daughter begins digging through her experiments and finds herself transported to another land amid a battle against a monstrous, oppressive force. The series will also feature the father following her into the new world.

Abrams has become one of the most influential and successful names in the TV industry for the past few decades, and it looks like HBO is betting on “Demimonde” only continuing that trend. As the network approaches the imminent end of its biggest series, “Game of Thrones,” as well, “Demimonde” is just the latest in a lineup of titles that the network will need to fill the gap that the fantasy series leaves next year.
