After originally announcing to bring the series back several years ago, the network has officially handed out a pilot order for a reboot of “Charmed,” this afternoon. The news also comes almost 12 full years since the original series concluded its run on the network back in 2006.

The original series, which followed a group of three adult sisters, at the time played by Rose McGowan, Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs. Shannen Doherty starred in the first two seasons; McGowan joined the show when she left.

The series will also take place in the modern day, despite having been previously billed as a prequel to the original, set in the 1970s. Coming from writers Jessica O’Toole and Amy Rardin (“Jane the Virgin”), the new take on the extremely popular property will be a “fierce, funny, feminist” reboot following three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches. Between defeating supernatural demons, “tearing down the patriarchy,” and maintaining familial bonds, the girls will discover that “a witch’s work is never done.”

There’s no telling what kind of connections to the original series there may be in the reboot, especially now that its modern day setting opens it up to the possibility of cameo or return appearances from some of the original show’s stars.

In addition, The CW has also handed out a pilot order for the new Bill Lawrence-produced comedy, “Dead Inside,” written by Katie Lovejoy, which follows a beat cop whose life is shaken up by the sudden appearance of her dead brother’s ghost, who before he died had been a hotshot police detective. But when the two begin seeing each other again, the show will follow them as they work together to help crime victims “both living and dead,” and also determine what unfinished business is keeping the brother’s spirit on Earth.
