“Preacher” has officially been renewed for a third season by AMC, co-creator Seth Rogen happily announced on Twitter Thursdsay afternoon. The TV show, which is based on the Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon comic book series of the same name, takes place in the American South when a disillusioned preacher is gifted with the power to make others do whatever he says. But when the preacher, Jesse Custer, discovers that God has left Heaven vacant and gone missing, he sets out on a mission to find his creator and hold him accountable for his departure.

The series, which is co-created by Rogen and Evan Goldberg with Sam Catlin acting as showrunner, stars Dominic Cooper as Jesse Custer. Accompanying Jesse on his mission are the Oscar-nominated Ruth Negga as Tulip O’Hare, an old flame from Jesse’s past, and Joe Gilgun as Cassidy, an Irish vampire.

Rogen and Goldberg serve as executive producers on the series, along with James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Ori Marmur, Vivian Cannon, Jason Netter, and Ken F. Levin.

While “Preacher” got off to a rocky start, critically, in its first season, the show’s sophomore outing — which concluded earlier this year — earned better reviews. The follow-up season also averaged a 0.4 rating in adults 18-49, which was down just two-tenths from the 0.6 average of its first.

This news comes just after AMC has had to say goodbye to two of its veteran series this year, with both “Halt and Catch Fire” and “Turn” airing their final seasons. But with this news, “Preacher” will now return for a 13-episode third season on the network in 2018.
