FOX has said repeatedly that if everyone’s schedules worked out, it wouldn’t hesitate to bring “The X-Files” back for another limited run

Everyone’s schedules must have worked out, because “The X-Files” will be back on FOX for another limited run in the 2017-18 series. The show will run for 10 episodes this time out, up from six for its initial revival last season.

Stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny and creator/executive producer Chris Carter will all return.

“Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators — these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why ‘The X-Files’ has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide,” FOX Entertainment president David Madden says in a statement. “Chris’ creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can’t wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of ‘The X-Files.'”

The “X-Files” revival in 2015-16 put up strong ratings. The six episodes — including the premiere after the NFC Championship game — averaged a 3.2 rating among adults 18-49 and 9.37 million viewers on their initial airing. A week of delayed viewing bumped ratings up to 4.8 and 13.59 million viewers. Both seven-day figures were in the Top 10 for the season.

FOX is calling the new episodes a “second chapter of ‘The X-Files’ event series,” which sounds better than “re-revival” or something like that. There’s no word yet on when in the 2017-18 season the show will air; the network announces its schedule for next season in mid-May.
