The news came Wednesday, ahead of the show’s sixth episode. “Legion,” which stars Dan Stevens as a man who believes he’s mentally ill but in fact may be a powerful mutant (and is very likely both), has been a solid performer for FX so far.

“The first season of ‘Legion’ was a stunning achievement,” FX head of original programming Eric Schrier says in a statement. “‘Legion’ is a wholly original take on the superhero genre. Our thanks to [creator] Noah Hawley for taking the creative risks and shattering expectations. It’s a privilege to work again with Noah, his producing partners, the outstanding cast and our partners at Marvel Television on another season of ‘Legion.'”

Through its first five episodes “Legion” has averaged a 0.5 rating among adults 18-49 and 1.07 million viewers the night it airs. With a week of DVR catchup, the first four episodes rose to averages of 1.3 and 2.8 million viewers (DVR data for episode 5 isn’t in yet).

“Legion” also stars Rachel Keller, Aubrey Plaza, Jeremie Harris, Jean Smart, Bill Irwin, Amber Midthunder and Mackenzie Gray.

The series will return in 2018, though an exact date and an episode count for Season 2 have yet to be determined. “Legion” joins these shows that have been renewed for 2017-18 and beyond.
