In a shocking move, The CW has axed a number of its long-running and newcomer TV shows – including The Vampire Diaries spin-off Legacies.

Alongside Legacies, it has been announced that Dynasty, Roswell, New Mexico, In the Dark, DC's Naomi and Charmed will also not be returning with a newer season.

Legacies, the spin-off follow-up to The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, follows Klaus' vampire daughter Hope as she navigates the supernatural world and her growing powers alongside her schoolmates at Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted.

The show, which was produced and written by The Vampires Diaries creator Julie Plec, will end with its June 16 season four finale, signalling the end for the vampire franchise on the network – at least for now.

As for Dynasty, the reboot of the original 1980s soap, created by Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, follows two of America's wealthiest families, the Carringtons and the Colbys, as they scheme and feud for control over the family fortune and their children's lives.

Despite a lucrative deal that had Dynasty streaming on Netflix, the show had been performing poorly with its viewership numbers for a while.

The show is due to end with its fifth season, which is currently airing its last batch of episodes.

In the Dark and Roswell, New Mexico had also enjoyed three seasons on the network before news of their cancellations broke out – both of the series' fourth and last seasons will air on June 6.

The drama series follows blind character Murphy Mason, who "has gone from a lazy receptionist to a drunken vigilante detective to a drug front proprietor, and now, she's a woman. on the run".

Roswell, New Mexico follows Liz Ortecho, played by Jeanine Mason, as she returns to her hometown, Roswell, to care for her sick father. There, she reconnects with her high school crush Max Evans and is shocked by the revelation that he and his siblings are aliens who have kept their true identities secret their entire lives.

However, there was one show that was prematurely cancelled before it could thrive. DC's Naomi, which garnered critical acclaim during its short run, was axed two days after it aired its two-hour finale.

According to Deadline, this was because the show struggled to find its audience and was thrown too many hurdles since its January 11 premiere – including the Beijing Olympics.

Naomi, which starred Kaci Walfall as the teen superhero, is the third DC series to be cut in recent weeks. The CW recently announced that it will also not be renewing Batwoman and Legends of Tomorrow, making the Arrowverse world shrink considerably.
