NBC has officially renewed the long-running comedy series for an eighth season today, the news of which comes almost three whole months ahead of its seventh season premiere, which is set to air on the network in February 2020.

The renewal today guarantees that “Nine-Nine” will officially air at least three seasons on NBC, after it spent its first five years on FOX, before it was canceled by the network in May 2018 and then quickly resurrected by NBC just one day later.

While the early announcement is a little unexpected, “Nine-Nine’s” renewal doesn’t come as much of a surprise. The series is not only produced in-house by NBC’s Universal Television, but is also a pretty good linear performer for the network, and consistently posts strong gains on digital platforms and in delayed viewing.

With NBC also saying goodbye to “Will & Grace,” “Sunnyside,” and “The Good Place” this year, the network will want to keep as many of its consistent comedy performers around heading into the 2020-21 TV season as it can. Fortunately for it, “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” more than fits the bill.

In its most recent season, the series averaged a 0.7 live + same day rating among adults 18-49 and 2.24 million viewers, on par with its fifth season’s 0.7 rating and 1.76 million viewer averages.

“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” is set to air its season 7 premiere Thursday, Feb. 6 on NBC.
