Announced early today, ABC has officially renewed its “Roseanne” spin-off, “The Conners,” for a second season. The news comes just two months after the freshman comedy series wrapped up its first season on the network back in January.

An episode count for the second season has yet to be officially set, though it is expected to be close to the 11-episode order of the first season. The show’s stars, Sara Gilbert, John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Lecy Goranson, and Ames McNamara, are all set to return, with additional cast members to be announced at a later date.

“We are proud to be continuing the story of the iconic Conner family,” said ABC Entertainment President, Karey Burke. “This team is fearless in their willingness to tackle contemporary issues with humor and heart, and I have no doubt they will continue to outdo themselves.”

The series, which was given a straight-to-series order last June following the network’s cancellation of its “Roseanne” revival, averaged a 1.6 live + same day rating in the adults 18-49 demo throughout its first season. That makes it the season’s highest-rated freshman comedy, and ties it with “Grey’s Anatomy” as ABC’s highest-rated scripted series.

So while “The Conners” came up well behind the ratings that the “Roseanne” revival scored, its ratings were still strong enough to make it a likely candidate for renewal.

With this announcement, “The Conners” now joins “A Million Little Things,” “The Good Doctor,” “Agents of SHIELD,” and “Modern Family” on a growing list of ABC shows confirmed to be returning for the 2019-20 season.
