It's official: Modern Family will be saying goodbye to fans after 11 seasons.

The widely-expected decision was announced by ABC at the TCA press tour on Tuesday (February 5), following months of reports that the cast were in high-level talks to return for one more season to end the show in 2020.

ABC has yet to announce how many episodes will comprise the 11th season, but did promise in a press release that there will be many "more milestone events" that fans won't want to miss.

Executive producer Christopher Lloyd also said: "For 10 years, our characters have bravely faced turning points in life and moved through them to great personal enrichment; we have chosen a different path by doing one more season of Modern Family.

"Even after 10 years together, we realised there are still some things our writers don’t yet know about each other's sex lives."

The renewal means that fans will get to see Hayley's (Sarah Hyland) exploits in motherhood, after it was revealed earlier in the season that she's expecting twins with boyfriend Dylan (Reid Ewing).

Even a decade into its run, Modern Family remains ABC's number-two rated comedy (behind The Conners) and it attracts more than 5 million viewers each week on average.

It also has one of the most impressive awards track records in sitcom history, having won the Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy Award five years in a row at its peak.

Modern Family airs on Wednesdays at 9pm ET on ABC. Sky One airs the show in the UK.
