“Trial and Error” has officially been canceled this afternoon, after airing two seasons on NBC. The cancellation comes several months after the critical darling wrapped up its second season last August, with its fate being left uncertain in the time since.

Despite the final decision coming today, the future hadn’t been looking good for “Trial and Error” for quite some time, after NBC’s option to renew the series expired last fall. Still the show’s producers, Warner Bros. Television, had reportedly spent the past few months looking for a different home for the comedy, but to no avail. Warner Bros. Television is, however, reportedly still open to bringing the series back, should the opportunity ever come up.

Created by Jeff Astrof and Matthew Miller, “Trial and Error” was designed as a spoof of crime documentaries, and followed the different cases taken on by attorney Josh Segal (Nicholas D’Agosto), and the rest of his legal team.

Each season of the show focused on a single case and its primary defendant, with John Lithgow filling that role in the show’s first season, and Kristen Chenoweth stepping in for season 2. Along with D’Agosto, the series’ main cast included Jayma Mays, Steven Boyer, Sherri Shepherd, and more.

While the show received its fair share of critical acclaim, it was never much of a ratings hit. After being moved from the midseason time slot it occupied during its first season to a summer slot in its second, the show experienced a noticeable ratings decline between seasons. It averaged a 0.4 live + same day rating among adults 18-49, predictably down from its first season’s 0.9 average.
