The first freshman comedy of the 2018-19 TV season to receive a full-season order has been chosen

Announced this afternoon by the network, ABC has officially ordered an additional 9-episodes for the first season of “Single Parents.” The news of which comes just a little less than a month after the series made its premiere on the network in September. It is set to air its fourth episode later tonight.

It is one of only a handful of shows so far this season to receive full season pickups. Just last week, FOX put out a full-season order for its sophomore medical drama, “The Resident,” NBC did the same with “New Amsterdam,” as did CBS with “FBI.”

Taking into account that most freshman and veteran half-hour comedies have struggled in the ratings so far this year, “Single Parents” has been doing fairly well for itself up to this point. It has averaged a 1.1 live + same day rating in the adults 18-49 demographic with 4.26 million viewers, and is currently one of the ABC five highest-rated comedies of the season so far.

Created by Elizabeth Meriwether and J.J. Philbin, the series follows a group of single parents who form their own support system, as they raise their kids and struggle to start new relationships. It stars Taran Killam, Leighton Meester, Kimrie Lewis, Jake Choi, Brad Garrett, and more. With this announcement, the show’s first season will now feature a total of 22-episodes.
