It looks like one of this year’s quieter freshman series will be returning for another season

Starz announced this morning that dramedy series, “Sweetbitter,” has been renewed for a 10-episode second season on the network. The news comes just a little over a month after “Sweetbitter” wrapped up its 6-episode first season in early June.

Based on the novel of the same name by Stephanie Danler, the series follows Ella Purnell’s Tess as she is introduced into a world of drugs, alcohol, love, lust, dive bars, and fine dining, all through her new job at a celebrated restaurant in downtown New York City. In addition to Purnell, the series also stars Tom Sturridge, Evan Jonigkeit, Eden Epstein, Jasmine Mathews, Caitlin FitzGerald, and more.

The series was met with mostly mixed reviews from critics when it debuted, though, it did appear to do better with the general public. In the ratings, “Sweetbitter” averaged a 0.06 live + same day rating in adults 18-49 with 164,000 average viewers – placing it in the lower half (ratings-wise) of Starz’s original series lineup.

Starz CEO, Chris Albrecht, commented on the series’ renewal with the following:

“Season one gave audiences a taste of the characters and backstory of an upscale New York restaurant, leaving them wanting more — which we will deliver with a second helping of ‘Sweetbitter.’ The immersion of the audience into the world in and around the restaurant will deepen as the series looks further into the complexities of Tess’ awakening and the lives of her new friends and colleagues in the second season.”

“Sweetbitter” will return on Starz sometime in 2019.
