“Young Sheldon” will live on for, at least, one more year at CBS

Ahead of the network’s time at the TCAs winter press tour this morning, the network officially handed out an early, second season renewal for its freshman comedy, “Young Sheldon.” Created by Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro, “Sheldon” is a prequel/spin-off series to the network’s smash hit sitcom, “The Big Bang Theory,” and focuses on the early life of “Theory” main cast member, Sheldon Cooper, played by the young Iain Armitage in the spin-off series, rather than the older Jim Parsons from “Theory.”

In addition to Armitage, “Young Sheldon” also stars Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Montana Jordan, Raegan Revord, Annie Potts, and more. Jim Parsons also serves as an executive producer on the series and often as a narrator throughout each of its episodes.

The renewal comes as little surprise as well, considering how well “Young Sheldon” has done in the ratings since its premiere back in September. Unlike many of CBS’ other failed attempts at recapturing the half-hour comedy success of “Big Bang Theory,” “Young Sheldon” has become the number 1 new comedy of the season with a 2.4 average rating in the coveted adults 18-49 demographic up until this point.

“Young Sheldon has made a huge impact on our schedule in the short time it’s been on the air,” said CBS Entertainment president Kelly Kahl. “While the show’s DNA is clearly rooted in The Big Bang Theory, Young Sheldon has staked out its own place in the TV universe with a unique creative tone, brilliant writing and a gifted multi-generational cast. We can’t wait to see Chuck, Steve, Jim and Todd [Spiewak]’s vision for how the Cooper family deals with Sheldon growing a year older…and smarter.”

With this renewal, “Young Sheldon” now joins “The Big Bang Theory” in CBS’ confirmed 2018-19 lineup.
