The fact that CBS has picked up its new comedy “Young Sheldon” for a full season doesn’t come as any kind of surprise

The timing of it, however, is novel: The network announced the full-season order for “Young Sheldon” Wednesday, just three days into the season and after one airing of the show.

Granted, that one airing was a big one: The “Big Bang Theory” spinoff/prequel delivered a 3.8 rating in adults 18-49 and about 17.2 million viewers. It was the highest-rated series premiere in the 18-49 demographic since “Empire” in January 2015.

“Young Sheldon” is (obviously) the first new series of the season to get a full-season order. Its Monday premiere was also the last viewers will see of it for a while.

The premiere was meant to capitalize on the lead-in from “The Big Bang Theory’s” season premiere — which it did, retaining nearly all of the parent show’s audience. “Young Sheldon” will now take the next month off before rejoining “Big Bang” on Thursday nights starting Nov. 2. The pickup is for nine more episodes, bringing its total for the season to 22.

CBS will debut another new comedy, “9JKL,” in the 8:30 p.m. Monday spot next week, again hoping for “The Big Bang Theory” to help launch it. “9JKL” stars Mark Feuerstein (“Royal Pains”) as a newly out-of-work actor who moves into the apartment between his parents (Linda Lavin and Elliott Gould) and his brother and sister-in-law (David Walton and Liza Lapira).
