“Last Week Tonight” will remain on HBO for many weeks to come. The cable channel has just handed out a big renewal to John Oliver’s late-night show

The pickup is for three seasons, which will take “Last Week Tonight” through its seventh year in 2020. Each season will consist of 30 shows.

“Last Week Tonight’s” current deal, which covered two seasons, was due to end later this year.

“We are thrilled to have John Oliver as an integral part of the HBO family and to continue to share his comedic brilliance with the world,” HBO Programming president Casey Bloys says in a statement. “His extraordinary genius for rich and intelligent commentary is second to none.”

“First,” adds Oliver in his own statement, “I firmly disagree with everything Casey just said. Second: We’re very grateful to Richard Plepler, Casey and everyone at HBO for letting us continue to do whatever it is we actually do. And finally: We’d also like to thank our staff for all their hard work. We’re incredibly proud of all of you, and rather than tell you that to your face, we’d like to do it in the cold, dispassionate form of a press release.”

“Last Week Tonight” has performed solidly for HBO of late. The show’s last 10 episodes have averaged a 0.6 rating among adults 18-49 and 1.48 million viewers for initial airings. That includes a spike for the most recent four episodes, which drafted off “Game of Thrones,” but even prior to that the show was drawing a 0.5 and 1.27 million viewers a week.

“Last Week Tonight” joins the recently picked up “Real Time with Bill Maher” in earning a long-term renewal from HBO.
