Following the close-ended conclusion of its 10-episode third season back in March, the network has canceled the Simon Rich-created comedy series. The show starred Jay Baruchel, Eric Andre and Britt Lower. Based on Rich’s book of short stories “The Last Girlfriend on Earth,” the series followed Baruchel’s Josh as he tried to navigate his way through the often unexpected life and death stakes of dating in the modern world.

From a ratings standpoint, this cancellation doesn’t come as much of a surprise, since “Man Seeking Woman” has always been a bit of an under-performer on the network. The series only averaged about 367,000 viewers throughout its third season — less than half of the total viewers who tuned in for its lead-in series, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”

However, it does come as a bit a surprise, based purely on FX and FXX’s well-known formula about renewing shows. Usually, the network bases their decisions on the critical reactions, the network’s opinion, and the viewership numbers of the show. While “Man Seeking Woman” never brought in a very big audience, it’s been a consistent critical favorite throughout the entirety of its three seasons.

Luckily, viewers won’t have to worry about any major cliffhangers left unanswered from “Man Seeking Woman,” as the show ended with Josh (Baruchel) happily married to his now-wife, Lucy (Lower). Keeping in tradition with the series’ high-concept spin on its premise, the series finale’s wedding between the two featured a wedding crashing monster, which should make it more than a suitable finale for the small, but dedicated following of fans it had acquired throughout its run.

Several critically acclaimed comedies still remain on FXX, including “You’re the Worst,” “Archer,” and the previously mentioned “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”
