'The Proton Transmogrification' will see Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and his friends celebrate Star Wars Day, and will include scenes set in Dagobah, Yoda's home in The Empire Strikes Back.

Lucasfilm has recreated the swampy planet for the episode, while also providing several Star Wars props, including a light sabre.

Bob Newhart will also return as former TV star Professor Proton in the episode, appearing as a Jedi.

The episode will be broadcast on May 1 in the US, shortly before Star Wars Day on May 4, in which fans declare: "May the fourth be with you."

Co-creator Chuck Lorre told The Hollywood Reporter: "We were approached by the Lucasfilm people to do something to celebrate Star Wars Day, which was nice."

Showrunner Steve Molaro added: "We knew that Bob was coming back and Lucasfilm called us, and we realised that this might be an opportunity to mix both stories and come up with something special."

Star Wars icons Carrie Fisher and James Earl Jones recently appeared in a Big Bang Theory episode.

In the UK, the episode will air on E4, which is currently about 12 weeks behind CBS in the US.
