HBO has cancelled three of its Sunday night half-hour comedies.

Thomas Jane's Hung, a sitcom about a high-school teacher moonlighting as a male prostitute, is the network's highest-profile axing due to its decent audience figures of around 4 million viewers and run of three years.

The Jonathan Ames-penned Bored to Death, starring Jason Schwartzman, Ted Danson and Zach Galifianakis, has also been decommissioned after three seasons.

How to Make It in America, a show centring around two Manhattan 20-somethings in the fashion business, has been scrapped after two years.

Laura Dern's Enlightened, which was lower rated than all three axed comedies, was today renewed for a new season.

HBO programming president Michael Lombardo and co-president Richard Plepler have freed up space for new scripted content to premiere in 2012.

Jane is nominated for 'Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series - Comedy Or Musical' at next year's Golden Globes.
