“Sunnyside” is moving on for greener pastures

The NBC comedy has effectively been cancelled, upon news that the upcoming episode on Thursday night will be the last to air in its regular primetime 9:30 p.m. slot. Instead, the show has been relegated to online sources, which will include the NBC App and NBC.com. Of course, things were not entirely grim for “Sunnyside;” NBC did order an additional episode, turning the season order into 11 instead of the original 10. Beyond that, however, there is unlikely to be a second season of the series.

In the meantime, NBC has chosen to move up the premiere date of the final season of the revival of “Will & Grace,” a reliable performer in regards to both ratings and critical approval. “Sunnyside” began with a 0.4 same-day rating in adults 18-49 with 1.78 million viewers, a score which grew to 1.0 when combined with delayed and multi-platform viewing.

Last week, its third episode drew a 0.3 with 1.18 million viewers. This has made it the weakest of the pack among the Big 4’s scripted, in-season debuts, putting it squarely in the sights of the Cancel Bear, who dubbed it a “sure bet to be canceled by May 2020.”

Created by Kal Penn and Matt Murray, “Sunnyside” stars Penn as disgraced former New York City Councilman Garrett Modi as he works with a group of immigrants attempting to study to become American citizens. The show’s cast also includes Diana-Maria Riva, Joel Kim Booster, Kiran Deol, Poppy Liu, and Moses Storm.
