The veteran actress checked into New York's Roosevelt Hospital after a bout with dehydration earlier this month and her health worsened after a heart attack, resulting her passing in her Manhattan home on Sunday (July 15).

Holm's death was confirmed by her great-niece Amy Phillips, who told The AP: "I think she wanted to be here, in her home, among her things, with people who loved her."

Holm is known for her role as Ado Annie on Broadway in the original 1943 production of Oklahoma!, as well as later forays into film and television.

She won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for 'Best Supporting Actress' for her work in the 1947 drama Gentleman's Agreement.

Holm received two further Oscar nominations for her work on Come to the Stable and All About Eve.

Her television work included stints on Columbo and Fantasy Island.

A philanthropist in her later years, Holm retired from acting in 2009.

She is survived by her sixth husband Frank Basile, who she married in 2004, and two sons from previous marriages.
