Damon Lindelof has admitted that he is feeling the pressure to pen a great sequel to Star Trek.

The Lost creator revealed that the writers on the highly-anticipated follow-up to the 2009 reboot are working hard to make the second Star Trek better than the original.

"I feel like the bar we've set for ourselves is that it has to be better than the first movie," Lindelof told Collider. "It has to justify itself for being a sequel and it has to go in a direction that you don't entirely expect, but feels familiar enough to sort of honour the 40 years of tradition that people have invested in this incredible pop culture phenomenon."

Lindelof concluded: "The challenge is immense and all I can say is… we're on it."

In August 2010, Lindelof cited The Dark Knight as an influence for the upcoming Star Trek sequel.

Director JJ Abrams said in May that production on Star Trek 2 will start soon, claiming that he could finally focus on the sequel now that he had completed working on Super 8.

Star Trek 2 is currently expected in cinemas next year, though Abrams confessed in June that the film may miss its release date.
