DreamWorks have announced the legendary filmmaker as the man to helm the big screen adaptation of the as-yet-unpublished book by Daniel H. Wilson, which will hit shelves in June 2011.

DreamWorks co-president of production Mark Sourian said: "This is a project we immediately sparked to and with Steven directing it we knew it was in the best possible hands to bring it to worldwide audiences.

"Robopocalypse embodies an imaginative story of a robot rebellion unleashed against the human race."

Spielberg has recently directed The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn and War Horse. Robopocalypse will begin filming in early 2012 for a 2013 release.

Wilson will also see another of his works released as a film in the shape of How to Survive a Robot Uprising.

The Hollywood News reports that Frat Pack actor Jack Black will take on a starring role, with Steve Pink set to helm the shoot.

Wilson's official site describes the spoof instructional book by stating: "If popular culture has taught us anything, it is that someday mankind must face and destroy the growing robot menace... so take no chances."
