Saw producer Oren Koules has confirmed that the seventh instalment in the horror series will be the last.

Koules told USA Today that the long-running franchise will come to a close with the release of Saw 3D later this year.

He said: "It's time to stop. We have told the story we wanted to tell, and this is going to be a great farewell."

Koules added that Saw 3D will feature 11 booby traps and had to be re-cut and re-submitted to the Motion Picture Association of America six times to be brought down from an NC-17 rating to an R.

"I'm surprised we got it," he commented. "It's more violent than any of them. But it's in 3D, it answers all the questions, it comes full circle. We have the goods on this one."

Saw 3D has also had its release date pushed back a week - to October 29 - in order to avoid horror rival Paranormal Activity 2.
