...but can't top The Force Awakens

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has - unsurprisingly - destroyed all competition at the US box office this weekend.

The much-anticipated sequel, directed by Rian Johnson, has opened to $220 million according to Box Office Mojo, who provide the top ten and their grossing amounts below.

This gives the film the second-best domestic opening ever behind its predecessor, The Force Awakens, which earned $247.966 million.

The Last Jedi stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Andy Serkis, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran and Benicio del Toro.

Following up in second place is another new release in the form of Ferdinand. The animation, which stars wrestler John Cena as a pacifist bull named Ferdinand who refuses to participate in bullfighting, earned $13,325,000 over the weekend.

It also stars Kate McKinnon, David Tennant, Bobby Cannavale and Peyton Manning.

Last week's number one, Coco, drops to third place having won $10,025,000. The Disney Pixar animation follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel Rivera (Anthony Gonzalez) who is accidentally transported to the land of the dead.

Wonder, which stars Owen Wilson and Julia Roberts, drops one place to number four after racking up $5,400,000 in earnings.

The drama features The Room's Jacob Tremblay as a child with Treacher Collins syndrome trying to fit in.

The top five is rounded out by DC's Justice League, which previously held second place. The divisive superhero movie, which stars Gal Gadot, Ben Affleck, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, Henry Cavill and Ray Fisher, earned $4,170,000 this weekend.
