Thor: Ragnarok has smashed its way to the top of this week's US box office

The movie - which is the third in the Thor anthology and stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Tessa Thompson, Jeff Goldblum and Benedict Cumberbatch - took a staggering $121 million during its first week of release in the States.

If that wasn't impressive enough, Ragnarok also took seven times more than its closest rival and this week's second-highest earner A Bad Moms Christmas, which made just over $17 million.

A Bad Moms Christmas sees Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn return as the trio of rebellious mothers from the first movie.

Despite the addition of Susan Sarandon, Christine Baranski and Cheryl Hines, it failed to make a seventh of the impression that Ragnarok did.

Hmm. Maybe that's what you get for releasing a Christmas film in early November.

Charting in third place was horror film Jigsaw, taking a modest $6.7 million in its first post-Halloween week, followed by Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween ($4.5 million) and Gerard Butler's disaster movie flop Geostorm ($3 million) respectively.

Rounding off the top 10 this week were Blumhouse Productions slasher parody Happy Death Day ($2.8 million); military and PTSD drama Thank You For Your Service ($2.6 million), the critically acclaimed but modestly-selling Blade Runner 2049 ($2.235 million), Only The Brave ($1.9 million) and The Foreigner ($1.5 million).

Check out the Nov. 3-5 figures below:

4. Boo 2: A Madea Halloween — $4.7 million
